Jazz Improvisation Camp

This camp is a jazz improvisation camp, not to be confused with a jazz band camp. The difference is that the emphasis is placed on improvisation, not on ensemble performance. It is geared mostly towards young musicians who wish to learn how to improvise. The camp presenter, Eddie Lewis, has taught jazz improvisation at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts, at various summer jazz camps, at other Consort Immanuel workshops and in private lessons. He is not only an experienced jazz musician himself but also quite an accomplished jazz teacher. Mr Lewis will work with the students in what he calls the "Five Areas of Study". This will be a hands on approach with lots of written music and exercises for them to practice. Many approaches to jazz improvisation are stifling and intimidating. This camp is different. The students will improvise within their first hour in the camp and will sound good doing it. Improvisation is not difficult. Making it sound like jazz is the challenge. So we will begin with improvisation and slowly add the jazz material as we move forward during the week.
